Absinthe Facts & Misconceptions:

Origin: Absinthe was originally created in late 18th-century Switzerland as a medicinal elixir using traditional ingredients made from grand wormwood, anise, fennel, and other herbs.

Preparation Ritual: Served by pouring cold water over a sugar cube into the absinthe, causing it to turn cloudy(louche).

19th-Century Popularity: It was favored by French artists and bohemians, nicknamed "The Green Fairy."

Hallucinations: Absinthe does not cause hallucinations; the thujone content is minimal.

Absinthe as Poison: Myths of madness and criminality were propaganda, not fact.

Bans: Early 20th-century bans were based on misinformation generated by competing beverage industries and later lifted in many countries.

Color: Absinthe's green color comes from natural herbs, not added colours. Also the green in authentic Absinthe can tend to slowly change from its vibrant green to light amber as it matures over time.
